Students have 20+ minutes to read their independent reading books in school every day. They are also expected to read outside of school every day. Every Thursday, students set a reading goal for how many pages they expect to read throughout the week. The minimum suggested reading goal is 60 pages a week. Most 7th graders set a goal of at least 75 pages, and many have goals between 100-200 pages.
The research is very clear when it comes to student reading. The more students read inside and outside of school, the more successful they are across subject areas. The research around student achievement in high school, as a direct result of reading more in middle school, is especially staggering. Anything parents can do at home to promote reading, such as setting aside 15 minutes before bedtime, would be beneficial now and in the future.
Any questions about independent reading and the goal setting system should be directed to Ms. Lanfear (alanfear@maplerun.org).
