New Cell Phone Policy

April 18, 2019

Dear SATEC 7th grade parents,

We are finding that more and more students are bringing their cell phones to school and are not having success focusing on their school work because of this distraction. We are concerned about this distraction and also that cell phones can be used inappropriately during the school day.  In order to help provide students with a clear focus and support a safe, responsible, and respectful learning environment we are asking that students do not bring their cell phones to school. As always, if students need to call their parents during the day they can ask their teacher permission to use one of the school phones.

If parents do decide to send their children to school with their cell phones they will no longer be in student possession during the school day (8:15 am until dismissal) beginning on April 29, 2019.  We will have students place their cell phones in a locked cell phone holder. Please be aware that this is a parent decision, and the school cannot take responsibility for your child’s cell phone that is brought to school. The teacher will lock the cell phone holder in homeroom and when students return to homeroom at the end of the school day (3:25-3:30) this will be unlocked and students can take them home.

If we see or hear cell phones during the school day, the phones will be left in the SSC (the first offense) where students can pick them up at the end of the school day.  Subsequent offenses will result in the phones being turned into the office. A parent will then be expected to pick up the phones during school hours as we will not return the cell phones to students at school. If the issue continues,  we will ask parents to come in and meet with the school team (teachers, principal, and SSC staff) to come up with an individual plan for this student.

Maple Run Parent Informational Night:

April 10th from 6:30-7:30

Area experts will be sharing critical information with parents on drugs, alcohol and vaping. We realize that these can be difficult times for families and teens in terms of this issue. Regrettably, adolescence can be a time when young people are faced with the tough choices of drug and alcohol use and experimentation. The MRUSD staff would like to reach out to partner with students and families to help students make healthy choices. This event will be held at Collins Perley. We will share what community experts know about the types of substances some students might be experimenting with. Parents will be given information about what to look for and resources they can access if children are at risk. Childcare will also be offered for this event.

New reading unit in Language Arts class - Please Read

Students started reading Fever, 1793 in class last week. This is our first experience with literature circles this year. Aimed at the young adult reader, this book tells the harrowing story of young Mattie and how she survives the infamous Yellow Fever epidemic of 1793. Fever 1793, serves as the main focus of the literature circles and prompts readers to validate the tragic events described therein. We will be pairing this historical fiction novel with various nonfiction material, mainly Jim Murphy's An American Plague, which I will be reading to them each day in class. Students will discuss what they read, refine their ideas, argue and debate, clarify misunderstandings, reconsider opinions, learn new words, and build new understandings about content through this literature circle experience.

How can you help?

It will be very helpful if you ask your child each night if they finished their reading assignment and associated job in class. They have approximately 40 minutes each day for this reading and writing, and many students finish in class.

Over the next two weeks, we will post this table in our homework blog to help you check in. The audio version of Fever is accessible in my Google Classroom, and students each have a copy of the book.
