Fundraiser & plans for tomorrow

Fundraiser
As you may have heard, Yankee Candle has experienced a difficult time filling holiday orders. This had a big impact on our fundraiser customers. We were told that Yankee Candle is working to fill backorders as quickly as they can. Unfortunately, we don't have any further information at this time.

Plans for Friday
In the morning, students who are up-to-date in Powerschool  - and who returned the permission slip - will be watching The Giver movie as part of our Dystopian literature unit. Those students who need extra time to work on overdue assignments will be working in a small group with an adult during that time.

In the short afternoon, we will have a learning community holiday celebration. Thank you to those families who are sending something in! Please remember our nut policy when sending in any foods.

Thank you,
Abby Lanfear

Plans for Friday

On Friday morning, we will have a celebration for those students who are current with their assignments in Powerschool. At that time, students who owe assignments will be working with teachers and staff, in an effort to catch up. Please check your child's progress in Powerschool for more detailed information about individual assignments and scores.

On Friday afternoon, our entire learning community will have a PBiS celebration during our shortened core time. Thank you to those students/families who have volunteered to send in food.

Have a great week.

Operation Happiness Food Drive Update

As a school, we donated almost 650 non-perishable food items for Operation Happiness! Thank you all for giving to this worthy cause. Today, the Operation Happiness volunteers told us that the local schools are the largest contributors to this effort. They really appreciate our involvement.

A special thank you to all the Lanfear & Howrigan LC students who did so much to make this happen. They hung posters, counted items daily, maintained a bar graph, and delivered food today.

Operation Happiness update

Our school total is hovering around 600 items. While that's impressive, we were over 1,000 last year. The 8th grade is currently in 4th place. Not bad, but I bet we could do better.

Students will have one more day to bring in items. The competition is extremely close! Our final collection day will be TOMORROW.

Tuesday, December 3, 2019

Please donate for Giving Tuesday!

Only two days left for our food drive! Here's the current status. We would love to have the 8th grade celebrate a come-from-behind win!

Tissues

Thank you so much to the families who donated tissues at the beginning of the school year. Unfortunately, our Learning Community is down to our last box. If you would like to donate some, we all would appreciate it.

Thanks,

Operation Happiness Canned Food Drive

The Lanfear & Howrigan learning community hosts the Operation Happiness food drive each year for the entire school. Some of our students have made posters and distributed fliers. They will also be counting the cans (school-wide) each day. We will maintain a bar graph in the center hallway to track the competition.

Please consider donating nonperishable food to this cause! You may send in food items with your child, and there is a collection location in our center area by the lab benches.

Your contributions are appreciated. Thank you!

Chains Essay

Chains essays were due in class today. Students have been given one more day for revisions. Their homework for tonight is to read their essay (word for word) to an adult.

There are many resources available in my Google classroom, if you're able to assist your child with the revision process.

Thanks,
Abby Lanfear

Operation Happiness Canned Food Drive

Operation Happiness
Canned Food Drive
K - 8th Grade Competition
November 15th-December 5th

Operation Happiness is a community initiative run by dedicated volunteers that relies heavily on the generosity and support of our community. With over 300 volunteers joining together each year, Operation Happiness is able to provide baskets of food during the holidays to over 1,100 families throughout Franklin and Grand Isle Counties. (fgiunitedway.org)

Every holiday season, SATEC families give back to the community in various ways. This year, we will once again be hosting a friendly school-wide competition to support Operation Happiness

If you can spare any non-perishable food items, please send them in with your child. Thank you for your contribution to our canned food drive!

Which grade will donate the most food? Keep an eye on the bar graph in the main hallway to find out!

Special Presentation - Northwest Technical Center & Powerschool information

Northwest Technical Center
Students attended a presentation this morning that highlighted the offerings of the Northwest Technical Center (part of BFA). Please ask your child about the presentation and if any of the programs piqued their interest. If you'd like to learn more about the programs, please visit this link.

Students will start the BFA course selection process this winter. There are many tech center introductory courses that they can sign up for as Freshman.

Our first field trip to BFA will be in January or February, when we'll have immersion experiences in their elective course offerings. It's always a favorite field trip for students.

Powerschool & Missing Assignments
We have a handful of students who have multiple missing assignments. Any missing assignments are flagged with an orange question mark in Powerschool. Please talk with your child about any assignments that they might need help with. We are available before school for extra help and encourage you to reach out to us if you child needs to come in early to meet with us. We also encourage you to take advantage of the Friday academic hour (2:30-3:30) available through https://hello.familyid.com/.

*Call 527-7191 and ask for Travis, if you have problems with your parent Powerschool login.

Thanks,
Ms. Lanfear

Pink Student Information Verification Forms and School Closing Information

We are still waiting on about a dozen pink Student Identification Verification forms to be returned between the two homerooms. These were sent home last week as part of our upgrade to Unified Classroom.

As the school is still in the process of updating all verification information, we cannot rely on an automated phone call should school need to be closed for a weather event. If you ever think there might be a chance of school closing and you don't receive a phone call, please watch Channel 3 and 5 on the TV as they will carry any Maplerun cancellations.

Thank you.

Yankee Candle fundraiser for the 8th grade class field trip

Today, students received a Yankee Candle fundraiser packet to benefit the 8th grade field trip fund. There will be a sales "check in" on October 23. The complete packets (with money) are due October 31st.

At this time, we are not sure where we will be heading for our class field trip in June. In previous years, we have taken day trips to Montreal. Much depends on school board approval and funds available.

Thank you to our two parent volunteers who are running this fundraiser, Heather Deslauriers and Kim Lawrence!

Field trip tomorrow!

Field Trip
On Tuesday, October 8th, we will visit the Flynn Theater to hear Congressman John Lewis speak about his book, March. Students should bring a bag lunch, unless they ordered one from the cafeteria. Please remember that all food needs to be nut-free!

50 States Quiz in Powerschool

Please check your child's Powerschool scores. Any student who scored a 1 or a 2 (below 40/50) on the 50 States Geography quiz needs to retake it during an enrichment period or before school. Understanding the names and locations of the states will help students with our study of U.S. History this year.
Thank you,
Ms. Lanfear

*If you are having trouble with your Powerschool account, please call Lorna. (527-7191) She will connect you to SATEC IT to troubleshoot the login.

SBAC Results Sent Home

SBAC results were sent out in the mail today. Having reviewed all student data for ELA and Math, we can say that we are very impressed by the overall growth in the Learning Community! The students worked hard on these tests last spring, and their work paid off. As a group, they made significant gains across the board. We appreciate their efforts. - Mr. Howrigan & Ms. Lanfear

Field Trip on Tuesday, October 8th & Academic Celebration

Field Trip
On Tuesday, October 8th, we will visit the Flynn Theater to hear John Lewis speak about his book, March. Please ask your child about March and what they've learned this week about the Civil Rights Movement.

**We will not be eating at school, so please make sure to pack a lunch, unless you signed up for a school lunch on the permission slip.**

Academic Celebration
From time to time, we celebrate students who are all caught up in Powerschool. Our next celebration will be on Tuesday afternoon when we return from the Flynn Theater. Students who do not have any 'missing' work in Powerschool will have an extra outside recess. For those students who need support to complete missing assignments, we will have a guided study hall at that time.

In general, if your child needs extra academic support, we encourage you to sign up for the Friday hour of support through www.familyid.com.

Reminders & Homework information

Homework: 8th grade year
Homework assignments are written daily on our homework boards within our classrooms. Students are also reminded about assignments on a daily basis. In general, homework is a continuation of what we're doing in class, and students get a good deal of time to work on assignments during the school day.

For the 8th grade year, this blog will be used for reminders and announcements and not for daily homework. We do this every 8th grade year, in response to parent and student feedback from previous looping classes. At the high school, teachers do not post their homework in one common place. This means that students need to take the initiative to write it down. Numerous parents have requested that we start this practice in 8th grade, to better support students' organizational independence.

Please continue to check Powerschool to monitor your child's progress. As always, your continued support at home is appreciated.

Reminder:
We are headed to the Flynn Theater on October 8th to listen to John Lewis speak about his book, March. Students need to bring a bag lunch or order from the Cafeteria. Hot lunch will not be available to them that day.

Thursday, September 26, 2019

Reminders & Announcements

  • School pictures will be on October 3rd at 1:40. Students were given an order form last Friday.
  • Our next field trip will be on October 8th, and we will be headed to the Flynn to see "March" by John Lewis. Students will start reading the book next week, so we're hoping for strong curricular connections.
  • Thank you for making sure your child has earbud headphones! We've noticed that most are prepared every day. We appreciate your help in this area.
  • Please check Powerschool for missing assignments. If your child needs extra academic time with support during the school day, we highly encourage you to sign your child up for the Friday early release time. The staff members who supervise this time are the same people who work in our classrooms everyday. Use the following link to register: https://www.familyid.com

Headphones needed

Hello families,

Students spend about 90 minutes each week on their chromebooks working on targeted, individualized instruction in both ELA and math. We have licensed accounts for both the iReady and Lexia programs. For this work to go smoothly, students will need headphones every day.

It would be very helpful if you could remind your child to have their headphones in their backpack.
We have a limited supply of "emergency" headphones. It takes away from instructional time when we have to distribute and collect these every day.

Thank you so much for helping us with this important supply item.

Mrs. Lanfear & Mr. Howrigan

We need chaperones! 9/13

On Friday, September 13th, we will be participating in "Lake Lessons" at the St. Albans Bay Park. Please be on the lookout for a permission slip today. The event is hosted by the St. Albans Historical Society and will run from 8:15 to 12:30. Please let us know ASAP if you're willing to chaperone a group of students. All chaperones must have completed the annual school background check. If you haven't completed yours yet, please stop in and see Kathy Sargent ASAP. There is still time to get it done before the buses pull out! Thank you!

Headphones

Hello families,

One of the requested supply items for 8th grade is headphones. It would be very helpful if you could remind your child to have their headphones in their backpack. We give students 1-2 pairs a year, and we label them with their names. It's remarkable how many end up lost.

Headphones are required for both our math and ELA diagnostic tests.

Thank you so much for helping us with this important supply item.

Mrs. Lanfear & Mr. Howrigan

Literature Circles Reading Assignments

Literature Circles have started up again! The theme of this unit is "teens who persevere". Please remind your child that they have reading and a 'job' to do each day. Most of them finish this in class, but I figured this chart might be helpful for you. Please ask your child about what they're reading. Talking about books is a great way to start a conversation about how their school day went.

As always, email me with any questions.

Thanks,
Abby Lanfear alanfear@maplerun.org
